Sorry for not keeping up with you on a daily basis's like I said I would. I truly was overwhelmed with doing both internship and working two jobs this summer. However, the experience and knowledge I gained at Project Row House this summer was phenomenal. I learned so much about the 3rd ward community here in Houston, Artist who use the same media as I do, and Also learned somethings about myself.
Before going to PRH, I always thought of the 3rd ward area as the "projects". I never thought of the historical value of the area; until McKenzie gave us a tour of the streets and buildings that are connected to PRH. Never did I once think of the legends each street, sidewalk, house and store had.
If you were following me before PRH, you would know my joint compound silhouettes were only of celebrities portraits. My mentors Carrie Schnieder, Carol Zou, and Ryan Dennis encouraged me to break out of the portrait phase and expand more like Kara walker, who I got my inspiration from.
"Get out there!" is what I remember Ryan Dennis telling me.
Doing just that, I went into overdrive with my studies. I started looking into different artist work, and started getting a sense of my own narration and voice. I took the inspiration of the 3rd ward community by making objects with a meaning and story behind it.
When you first walk into my studio, you would see a open space with each pieces going in a symbolic timeline from Africa to present time. Each piece has a story to tell and a meaning behind it. (click button below to view each piece)
What I loved most about the overall experience was the opening day for viewers. I never experienced so much mixed emotions about my artwork. This was by far the first time I ever felt like a true artist, and not did I feel an artist. I finally felt connected with the Houston art community.
The overall experience was just as positive as my professors described it, but better. This will forever be a piece of me I will never forget, and it will always give me something to keep inspiring to become a better Artist.
